Last weekend, AfREN hosted another inspiring edition of the AfREN Talk Series with the theme:

“Beyond the Laboratory: Investing in Our Equity for Africa’s Food Future.”

What started as a conversation quickly became a call to action.

We explored how food scientists can create impact beyond research laboratories by transforming indigenous knowledge into innovation, strengthening food value chains, building sustainable enterprises, and creating solutions that directly benefit African communities.

One message stood out throughout the session: our expertise is not limited to scientific publications; it is a powerful tool for solving real-world challenges.

The discussions challenged participants to rethink the future of food science in Africa, embrace collaboration, invest in local opportunities, and recognize that Africa’s food future depends on researchers who are willing to move beyond discovery and into impact.

A heartfelt thank you to our speakers, moderators, participants, and everyone who made the session engaging and insightful. Your questions, perspectives, and contributions enriched the conversation.

This is only the beginning. The journey of building a resilient, innovative, and equitable African food system continues.

Together, we move beyond the laboratory.
