The African Food Research Network (AfREN) successfully hosted a Virtual Practical Workshop on Systematic Review Methodology

It was a pleasure hosting highly practical AfREN’s Systematic Review Workshop to a Global Audience on Saturday 13th December 2025; bringing together close to 100 participants from across academia, research institutions, and industry all over the Globe.

The workshop was designed as a hands-on, step-by-step learning experience, moving beyond theory to real-time practice. Participants actively followed the facilitator throughout the session, applying each step as it was demonstrated on shared screen.

A key highlight of the workshop was the use of a planned group systematic review publication as a live case study.

Through this approach, participants gained practical exposure to:

  • Formulating structured systematic review questions
  • Developing reproducible search strategies
  • Applying PRISMA guidelines
  • Screening literature and extracting data
  • Understanding the pathway from review conception to publication

The session was highly interactive, with participants asking questions, sharing challenges, and receiving immediate clarification on areas commonly considered difficult in systematic reviews.

To God be the glory for the successful execution of the workshop, and deserved recognition to our amiable, intelligent, knowledgeable and skillful facilitator @Dr. Samson Oyeyinka, whose clear explanations and practical demonstrations from concept to publication significantly enhanced participant engagement and learning outcomes.

Feedback from participants indicated improved confidence, clearer understanding of systematic review workflows, and strong appreciation for AfREN’s practical training approach.
