Around the globe young people have wonderful ideas how to protect our environment, how to reduce pollution and how to produce sufficient food to feed everybody, to end child hunger and to provide mothers with sufficient food for their families.

Food Science and Technology plays an important role in ensuring the health and wellbeing of people around the world and is essential to resolve food safety and sustainability challenges now and in the future. The solution is unique to each country even right down to communities within each country.

To meet the challenges of the growing World Population especially in Africa with its high number of young and active people it is important not only to develop and improve technologies which have been successfully in place over generation it will become central to transform scientific insight into practical applications.

There are many areas which play a role in this context, some examples:

  1. Sustainable food production and processing together with the reduction of losses along the entire food chain from like seed-sowing, harvesting, processing, transportation/distribution, retail sale, preparation/consumption!
  2. Development and exploration of new unconventional food resources like cultured meat, algae preparations, insect-based preparations, utilisation of food waste!
  3. Development of new less energy and water consuming processes like solar dryer/cooker, wet-air washing, product-printing, reuse of transport/packaging materials!
  4. Application of IT / modern analytical methods in the food chain like computer-controlled processing, online analysis of components, share marketing opportunities!
  5. Improving food quality/adapting food quality to consumer needs like preventing overprocessing, producing senior citizen products!
  6. Consumer education like information quality criteria, optimal preparation methods, optimal storage methods!
